What I do

Josephine & Billie’s seeks to become a thought leader in this space for the 1.3 million women of color in the city of Los Angeles and for millions more around the world with a multi-prong approach. We believe that we can fill a large hole in the retail market by becoming not just a dispensary, but a destination, bolstered by our connection to the community and authentic POC voice. Education is at the forefront of everything we do, as a part of our holistic approach to consumption. From the info graphics on the walls that describe how to read cannabis labels to the breakdown on why sativa and indica aren’t the best way to predict how a strain will make you feel, we make sure our customer base knows what they are buying. Our staff is educated not only on the product lines, but the history of cannabis on a whole, and can talk about Harry Anslinger just as quickly as they discuss the benefits of the entourage effect.

Whether its dosage help, and potency questions or bio-availability concerns, our product knowledge helps empower our customer base to make informed purchases – and to become loyal customers. Finally, the store seeks to be an important community partner, hosting senior groups from nearby churches for cannabis education, supporting local movements and advocating for community reinvestment.

Inspired by a lack of stylish, safe cannabis storage systems and a distain for storing medicine in a shoebox, Apothecarry Brands CEO Whitney Beatty is a successful entertainment industry executive turned cannabis storage designer that’s spearheading her quickly growing start-ups first financial raise. After meeting so many like minded cannabis users, who lamented about a lack of good storage system, worried about securing buds away from kids and pets and who were tired of searching around for their stash to discover it dried out from plastic baggies and non-airtight dispensary jars, Apothecarry was born.  The brand seeks to redefining the image of cannabis users who take pride and pleasure in their stash, while filling a hole in the marijuana paraphernalia market for everyone from the attorneys who tokes after their high powered workday, to the  “stiletto stoners” who are hosting ladies night, to the seniors using medication for health benefits and everyone in between who demands the best in all things. We hope to de-stigmatize cannabis usage and diversify the ideas about the people who partake.  We are the right team because we have the passion, drive and traction to make a impact on the burgeoning industry.

Cannabis has grown up. Gone are the days that weed was linked to stoner culture, teen boys basements and hippies.  With legalization and more medical research than ever before, the profile of marijuana users is changing from something elicit to something to be enjoyed. As specific strains gain popularity, consumers are now more focused than ever on the quality of their buds --  taking pride in a good “stash” in the same way one may pull out a fine single malt scotch or a Cuban cigar.   They demand the best smoking experience, and with the Apothecarry Case, that’s exactly what they will get.  High style and high quality goods designed with the upscale smoker in mind.

The Apothecarry case is the natural next step in the evolution of legal cannabis.  A high-end luxury case made to keep your stash at its freshest, most optimum quality -- whether you medicate daily, socially, or only on special occasions.  Our patent pending Airtight Humidity Jars guarantee that your herbs are stored in the best of conditions, won’t mold or grow brittle -- or worst yet, stale -- all so that YOU can enjoy the full nuanced and layered experience of your high quality herbs. FINALLY, you can have the experience that your grower intended!  Not to mention that it keeps your stash labeled, organized and surrounded by experience elevating top quality tools – We mean, keef catcher anyone?!?!   Plus with its sleek, sexy design and luxury feel, it’s serves as part of the pampering you deserve – and a stash to show with pride while enjoying an after dinner toke with friends.   Oh, and don’t forget what’s most important – a secure key lock that keeps your stash safe and secure to transport or store. The final result is an upscale smoking experience that the indo-lifestyle is all about.

Josephine & Billies is the first dispensary in the nation to focus on the medical and recreational needs of women of color.

But it isn’t just a retail store, it’s an experience. Patrons will walk into a euro smoke shop but the password “Billie sent me” is the trigger for them to be ushered through a hidden door in the wall into a whole new vibe….

From the Tea Pads of the early 20’s until today, people of color have been using plant medicine for years — and were largely demonized for it. Today, these communities still feel the effects of the war on drugs without seeing the larger benefits of legalization. In fact studies say women of color may be in most need of the touted benefits of CBD. Women are already twice as anxious as men, and research shows anxiety is chronic and more intense for black women than it is for white women. And yet we know that black women have the least access to health care, and when we do have access, data shows the doctors are not listening to them. And even worse, when they do listen, often cost can make prescriptions unattainable. There are also societal factors at play. Communities of color were disproportionally effected by the war on drugs many have apprehension, and little experience using the plant. Additionally most cannabis retailers in communities of color are unlicensed, with little information, insight or programming and feel unsafe. Thus, it becomes critically important to offer, safe cannabis within communities of color, and offer education and insights to using the plant effectively.

The store also prioritizes carrying black, brown, women-led, and LGBTQ led brands, in order to increase representation in the cannabis space. Josephine and Billie isn’t just a social equity business, nor is it just dispensary. Ultimately, it’s an opportunity to bring cannabis home to a community that for far to long has gotten the short end of the stick in retail options, in way that honors the contributions the community has already made to the industry. Full circle.

We judge effectiveness by our educational reach, the customer flow, and how we are able to effect change within the cannabis space with our commitment to increasing representation. As an example, we have spearheaded programs like THE BOX PROJECT, which we founded in partnership with other LA-based Black-owned social equity dispensaries to highlight the importance of equity and inclusion in cannabis while creating unity and support amongst the black cannabis community. It also provided an opportunity to encourage Angelenos to buy black in February while introducing them to the quality and culture brought to the industry by Black-owned brands. The project expanded and included new boxes highlighting women, Latino and LGBTQ led brands.
